Water features and ponds (installation only): what's involved
What the service is
We design and install ponds and water features as part of a garden. That includes digging and shaping, lining, edging and building the surrounding hard and soft landscaping so the feature sits naturally in the garden. We provide installation only and don't offer pond or water feature maintenance.
Who it's for
Homeowners who want a focal point, people who enjoy the calming sound of moving water, and anyone redesigning their garden who wants water to be part of it.
When it makes sense
The best time to add a pond or water feature is when the rest of the garden is being planned, so levels, paths and seating can be designed around it.
Why professional installation matters
Ponds and water features need to be level, properly lined and safely edged. Poor installation leads to leaks, uneven water lines and edges that move.
Recent water features and ponds (installation only) work

What happens if it's left
A badly installed pond or water feature can quickly become an eyesore or a problem.
Leaks and dropping water levels
Damaged or poorly fitted liners lose water and can be hard to repair once surrounding landscaping is in place.
Uneven edges
If the pond isn't level, the liner shows on one side and the feature looks unfinished.
Safety concerns
Open water needs thought if you have young children. Placement and design should be considered carefully.
Common mistakes we see
- ✕ Not getting the pond level before lining it.
- ✕ Placing a pond where it can't be seen or enjoyed from the house or seating areas.
- ✕ Leaving edges unsupported so they collapse over time.
- ✕ Adding a water feature after the garden is finished, causing extra disruption.

Ponds and water features in detail
Water can be added to a garden in several ways, from a large pond to a compact feature on a patio.
Ponds
Ponds can be formal, with straight edges and paving surrounds, or informal, with natural curves and planting. Size and depth depend on the space and how you want to use the pond.
Water features
Smaller water features suit patios, courtyards and compact gardens, adding the sound of moving water without taking up much space.
Positioning
We'll consider where the feature can be seen and heard, how it relates to seating and paths, and practical points like access.
Edging and surrounds
Paving, stone or planting around the edge hides the liner and keeps the edges stable.
Installation only
We design and install ponds and water features. We don't offer ongoing pond or water feature maintenance.
Formal and informal styles
A formal pond with clean, straight edges and paving surrounds suits a modern garden and pairs well with a porcelain patio. An informal pond with curved edges and planting suits a more relaxed, natural garden. We'll look at the style of your garden and home and suggest the approach that fits.
Water features on patios and in small gardens
You don't need a large garden to enjoy water. A compact feature on a patio or beside a seating area can add the sound and movement of water without taking up valuable space. Building it in at the same time as the patio means power and pipework can be planned and hidden neatly.
Planning for safety
If young children use the garden, open water needs careful thought. A smaller water feature without open depth may be a better choice than a pond, or the pond can be positioned and designed with safety in mind. We'll talk this through honestly at the visit.
Combining water with the rest of the garden
Water works best when it's planned with the rest of the layout. Paths that lead to it, seating that faces it and planting that frames it all make the feature feel part of the garden. Because we also build patios, lawns, decking and borders, we can design and build the whole area together.
Building water into a new garden design
If you're planning a full garden design and build, it's the ideal time to add water. The pond or feature can be dug and lined during the groundwork stage, before patios, lawns and borders go in, so nothing has to be lifted or rebuilt later. Its position can also be planned around the views from the house and the main seating area, which is where you'll enjoy it most. Tell us early if you'd like water in the garden and we'll design the rest of the layout around it.
What to think about before you decide
Before choosing a pond or water feature, think about where you'll see it from, whether you'd like to hear it from the house or a seating area, how much of the garden you're happy to give over to it, and who uses the garden. These answers shape the size, style and position, and we'll go through them with you on the visit.
What happens after installation
We design and install your pond or water feature and hand it over finished, with the surrounding landscaping complete. We don't offer ongoing pond or water feature maintenance, so we'll explain at handover what the feature will need so you can look after it or arrange care yourself.
