Composite and wooden decking: what's involved
What the service is
We design and build new decks in composite or timber, and remove and replace old decking. Every deck starts with the frame and supports, because that's what decides whether it stays level and solid.
Who it's for
Homeowners with sloping gardens who need a flat area without major groundwork, people who want an outdoor dining or seating space, and anyone with an old timber deck that's rotting, slippery or loose.
When it's needed
If boards are soft, split or slippery, the deck moves when you walk on it, or you're spending every spring treating and repairing it, it's usually time to replace it. Decking is also a good option where a patio would need extensive digging out.
Why professional help matters
A deck is a structure. It needs proper supports, correct spacing for airflow and drainage, and fixings that won't fail. Shortcuts here lead to bouncing boards, rot and safety problems.
Recent composite and wooden decking work

What happens if it's left
Old or badly built decking gets worse each year as water gets into the timber and the frame.
Rot and soft boards
Timber that stays damp rots, and once the frame goes the whole deck can become unsafe.
Slippery surfaces
Algae and moss build up on old timber, making the deck dangerous in wet weather.
Constant upkeep
Treating, staining and replacing boards year after year costs time and money. One of our customers had their wooden decking replaced with composite as part of a wider garden transformation.
Common mistakes we see
- ✕ Building a new deck on an old or undersized frame.
- ✕ Not leaving enough ventilation under the deck.
- ✕ Using the wrong fixings, which rust or work loose.
- ✕ Not planning how the deck meets the patio, lawn or garden room.

Decking in detail
The main choice is between composite and timber, but the frame, height and layout matter just as much.
Composite decking
Composite boards are made to resist rot and need far less upkeep than timber. They hold their colour better and don't need staining. They usually cost more at the start, but save time and money on maintenance.
Timber decking
Timber has a natural look and usually costs less to install. It needs regular cleaning and treatment to stay in good condition.
Replacing timber with composite
If your frame is sound, it may be possible to reuse it. If not, we'll replace it so the new boards sit on a solid structure. We'll tell you which applies at the visit.
Raised and multi-level decks
On sloping ground, decks can be built at different heights with steps between, creating usable levels without moving large amounts of soil.
Decking with garden rooms and patios
Decks are often built in front of a garden room or alongside a patio. Planning them together keeps heights consistent and the transitions neat.
Heights, steps and handrails
A deck that sits just above ground level needs very different construction from one raised to meet a back door on a sloping garden. Higher decks need stronger supports, safe steps and, where appropriate, balustrades or handrails. We'll plan the height so the deck lines up with doors, patios and lawns, and so steps are comfortable to use.
Ventilation and drainage under the deck
Water and trapped damp under a deck are what cause frames to rot and boards to grow algae. We leave the right gaps between boards, keep airflow under the deck and prepare the ground beneath it with weed control so the structure stays dry and lasts as long as possible.
Planning the deck around how you'll use it
Think about where the sun is in the evening, where a table and chairs will go and how you'll move from the house to the deck and on to the lawn. We'll talk these through on the visit, so the deck is the right size and in the right place rather than simply filling an empty corner.
Composite versus timber over time
Timber decking usually costs less to install, but it needs cleaning and treating to keep it in good condition. Composite costs more at the start and needs far less upkeep. We'll explain both honestly so you can decide.
Decking on new build and sloping plots
New build gardens often slope away from the house or have a step down from the patio doors. A deck can bring that level out to meet the door, giving you a flat, usable area straight off the house without building retaining walls. On steeper plots, a deck can be combined with a patio or lawn on a lower level, joined by steps.
Clear quotes for replacement decks
When we quote to replace an old deck, the quote will make clear whether the existing frame is being reused or replaced, what's happening to the old boards and what the new deck includes. That way you know exactly what you're paying for before any work starts.
