Full garden design and build: what's involved

What a full design and build covers

A full garden design and build is the whole job, not a single feature. We look at how your garden is shaped, how water drains through it, where the sun falls and how you want to use the space, then plan and build everything together: groundwork and levelling, drainage, patios and paths, lawns, decking, raised planters and borders, fencing and, if you want one, a garden room. Because one team builds it all, each part is planned around the others instead of being squeezed in afterwards.

Who it's for

Most of our design and build customers fall into a few groups: people who have moved into a new build and been left with a bare, compacted plot; homeowners whose garden has become unusable because it slopes, floods or has simply worn out; and families who want a space that works for children, entertaining or working from home. We also work on commercial and educational sites where an outdoor area needs to be practical, safe and hard-wearing.

When it makes sense

A full design and build is usually the right call when you want more than one change, when the ground itself is the problem, or when previous piecemeal work hasn't joined up. If you're planning a patio this year and a lawn next year, designing both now saves you lifting new paving later to fix levels or run drainage underneath it.

Why it's worth using a professional

The parts of a garden that decide whether it lasts are the parts you never see: the levels, the sub-base and the drainage. Get those wrong and patios sink, lawns turn to mud and fences lean within a few winters. Richard has 20 years' experience planning those foundations, and our customers regularly mention the knowledge he brings to the first visit, including advice on problems like heavy blue clay and standing water.

What happens if it's left

A garden that doesn't work rarely stays the same. Left alone, most of the problems we're called out to get worse each winter.

Water has nowhere to go

Poorly levelled ground and heavy clay soil hold water. Lawns become waterlogged, paving moves, and in the worst cases water runs back towards the house. One of our customers was left with flooding after a garden was levelled without drainage, and needed a French drain system and raised planters to put it right.

Small fixes add up

Patching one area at a time often means paying twice: a new lawn laid before drainage is fixed, or a patio built at the wrong height for the decking that comes after. Joined-up planning avoids ripping out work you've already paid for.

The space goes unused

A garden that's muddy, uneven or overlooked tends to be avoided, which wastes one of the most valuable parts of your home.

Common mistakes we see

  • ✕ Laying turf or paving straight onto compacted new-build ground without checking how water drains.
  • ✕ Choosing materials before deciding how the garden will actually be used.
  • ✕ Splitting one project between several trades, so no one is responsible for the levels between them.
  • ✕ Picking the cheapest quote without asking what goes underneath the finished surface.

How we work

  1. 1

    Site visit

Richard visits, walks the garden with you and listens to how you want to use it. He looks at levels, soil, drainage, access and anything that could cause problems later.

  2. 2

    Design and free quote

We put together a plan and a clear, itemised quote so you can see what's included. Customers often tell us the quote was transparent and easy to understand.

  3. 3

    Groundwork

We excavate, level and install drainage first, because everything else depends on it. This is the stage most likely to be rushed elsewhere, and the one we never cut short.

  4. 4

    Build

Patios, paths, lawns, decking, planters, fencing and any garden room are built in the right order by our own team, so each part meets the next at the correct height.

  5. 5

    Finish, clean and handover

We tidy and wash the site down as we go and at the end, walk you through the finished garden, and explain the guarantee on each part of the work.

Garden design and build in detail

Every garden is different, but most full builds draw on the same core elements. Here's how we approach each one and the choices you'll have along the way.

Levelling and groundwork

Sloping gardens can be levelled into a single flat area or split into terraces with steps and retaining walls, depending on how steep the ground is and how you want to use it. We work out where soil needs to come from or go, and how the finished levels will meet the house, the boundaries and any existing features.

Drainage

Where ground holds water, we can install drainage such as French drains, which collect water through a gravel-filled trench and carry it away from the areas you use. Raised planters can also lift planting above wet ground. Drainage is planned before any surface goes down, not added after the first flood.

Hard landscaping

Patios, paths and steps give a garden its structure. As a Paving Stones Direct approved installer, we can help you choose paving that suits the look of your home and how much use the area will get.

Lawns and soft landscaping

We lay real turf or artificial grass, build borders and raised planters, and prepare the ground properly underneath so lawns stay level and healthy.

Decking, fencing and structures

Composite or timber decking, new fencing and gates, and bespoke garden rooms built on site can all be part of the same plan.

New build gardens

New build plots are often left with compacted ground, builders' rubble buried just below the surface and turf laid directly on top. We assess what's there and deal with it properly before building, which is why so many new build owners come to us for a complete transformation.

Domestic, commercial and educational sites

Home gardens are designed around how a family lives. Commercial and educational spaces need to handle heavier footfall and be safe and easy to look after, so material choices and layouts are planned with that in mind.
