Artificial grass and real lawns: what's involved

What the service is

We install artificial grass and lay new real turf lawns. In both cases the finished lawn is only as good as the ground underneath, so most of the work goes into clearing the old surface, levelling, dealing with drainage and building the right base before the new lawn goes down.

Who it's for

Families who want somewhere for children and pets to play, people who want a green lawn without regular mowing, new build owners whose turf was laid straight onto compacted ground, and anyone whose existing lawn has become bumpy, patchy or waterlogged.

When it's needed

If your lawn turns to mud every winter, has worn bare where people walk, sits lower than the patio or is full of dips and lumps, it's usually time to start again rather than keep patching it.

Why professional installation matters

Artificial grass laid on a poor base ripples, sinks and holds water. Real turf laid on compacted or wet ground struggles to root. The difference between a lawn that lasts and one that doesn't is almost always the preparation.

What happens if it's left

A struggling lawn doesn't usually recover on its own, especially on heavy clay or new build ground.

Waterlogging

Water sitting on the lawn kills grass, attracts moss and makes the garden unusable for months. Several of our customers had lawns re-turfed as part of levelling and drainage work.

Uneven ground

Dips and lumps get worse as soil settles, making the lawn harder to use and, for real grass, harder to mow.

Wasted money on quick fixes

Re-seeding or laying new turf on top of the same problem ground usually means paying again within a year or two.

Common mistakes we see

  • ✕ Laying artificial grass directly on soil without a proper compacted base.
  • ✕ Turfing over compacted new build ground or buried rubble.
  • ✕ Ignoring drainage on heavy clay soil.
  • ✕ Leaving visible joins or loose edges on artificial grass.

How we work

  1. 1

    Site visit

We look at the existing lawn, the soil, how water drains and how you want to use the space, and talk through real turf versus artificial grass.

  2. 2

    Free quote

You get a clear, itemised quote that shows the preparation work as well as the lawn itself.

  3. 3

    Clearing and preparation

What you get

Usable all year

Proper preparation and drainage mean the lawn can be used instead of avoided after rain.

Less time spent on upkeep

Artificial grass removes the need for mowing. A well-prepared real lawn is far easier to keep healthy.

Level and safe

A flat, even lawn is safer for children to play on and nicer to use.

Built to last

The right base stops artificial grass rippling and helps real turf root properly.

Clean, tidy installation

Customers mention the site being kept clean and tidy throughout.

Peace of mind

All our work is guaranteed. Guarantee terms vary by product and project, and we'll explain exactly what's covered when we quote.

Lawns in detail

Choosing between artificial grass and real turf comes down to how you use your garden, the conditions and how much upkeep you want.

Artificial grass

Artificial grass stays green and even all year with no mowing. It suits busy families, shaded areas where real grass struggles and people who'd rather spend weekends using the garden than looking after it. It needs a well-compacted, free-draining base, neat joins and secure edges to look natural and last.

Real turf

Real turf gives a natural look and feel, stays cooler in summer and supports wildlife. It needs regular mowing and care, and it relies on good soil and drainage underneath to establish well.

Re-turfing

If your lawn has failed, we strip the old turf, correct levels and drainage, prepare the soil and lay fresh turf. One customer had their garden levelled, drained and re-turfed as part of a wider transformation.

Lawns with drainage problems

On heavy clay, a lawn can stay wet for long periods. Drainage, such as French drains, and raising soil levels where appropriate can make a big difference before any new lawn goes down.

Lawns as part of a wider garden

Lawns are often installed alongside a new patio, borders or decking. Planning them together means edges meet neatly and levels line up.

Edges and transitions

Where a lawn meets a patio, path, border or deck, the edge needs to be finished properly. Artificial grass needs secure edging so it doesn't lift or curl, and real turf needs a clean edge that is easy to keep tidy. Planning the lawn level against the surrounding surfaces avoids trip edges and stops water running from one onto the other.

Lawns for families and pets

If children play football or dogs run the same route every day, a real lawn can wear through quickly in those areas. Artificial grass handles that kind of use well, while a real lawn can still work if it's laid on well-prepared, free-draining ground. We'll ask how your garden is used before recommending either.

Clay soil and new build ground in South Yorkshire

Much of the ground around Rotherham, Sheffield and Doncaster is heavy clay, and new build plots are often heavily compacted by site machinery. Both hold water near the surface. That's why we check how your ground drains before recommending a lawn, and deal with it first where needed, rather than laying a new surface that will struggle by the first winter.
