Patio and driveway construction: what's involved

What the service is

We design and build new patios, paths and driveways, and relay existing ones that have sunk, cracked or come loose. That covers everything from digging out and building the sub-base to laying, pointing and finishing the edges, so the surface you see sits on foundations that can take the load.

Who it's for

Homeowners who want a usable outdoor seating or dining area, families who need more off-road parking, and anyone whose existing paving has become uneven, slippery or a trip hazard. We also work on commercial and educational sites where hard surfaces need to handle heavier use.

When it's needed

Common reasons include paving that rocks underfoot, puddles that sit for days, weeds pushing up through joints, a driveway that has started to sink where cars park, or simply wanting more space outside the back door. It also makes sense to do paving at the same time as other garden work so levels and drainage are planned together.

Why professional installation matters

Paving fails from the bottom up. Most of the problems we're asked to fix come from a thin or poorly compacted base, the wrong fall for drainage or edges with nothing holding them in. Those are invisible once the paving is down, which is why we spend the time on them first.

What happens if it's left

A failing patio or driveway rarely fixes itself. Each winter, water gets into the base, freezes and pushes the surface further out of place.

Sinking and rocking slabs

Once one area drops, water collects there, softens the base further and the dip spreads. What starts as one loose slab can turn into relaying a whole area.

Water against the house

Paving laid without a fall away from the building can direct rainwater towards walls and doors instead of away from them.

Trip and slip hazards

Uneven edges and slippery, mossy surfaces are a real risk, especially for children and older relatives.

Common mistakes we see

  • ✕ Laying slabs on a thin layer of sand or soil with no compacted sub-base.
  • ✕ Ignoring the fall, so water pools on the surface or runs towards the house.
  • ✕ Using patio-grade paving for a driveway that has to take the weight of cars.
  • ✕ Choosing paving on looks alone without thinking about grip, staining and upkeep.

How we work

  1. 1

    Site visit

Richard looks at the area, the ground, existing levels and where water needs to go, and talks through how you'll use the space.

  2. 2

Choosing your paving and free quote

We help you choose paving that suits your home and the job it needs to do, then provide a clear, itemised quote. One customer described the whole process, from quote to choosing paving, as easy and stress-free.

  3. 3

    Excavation and sub-base

We dig out to the right depth, then lay and compact a sub-base suited to whether the surface will carry people or vehicles.

  4. 4

    Laying and finishing

Paving is laid to the correct falls, cut neatly around edges and features, and jointed to keep it stable and weed-resistant.

  5. 5

    Clean-up and handover

We clean the finished surface and the surrounding area, walk you through it and explain the guarantee that applies.

What you get

Stays flat for longer

A properly built, compacted base is what stops slabs sinking and rocking.

Safer underfoot

Even surfaces and suitable paving reduce trip and slip risks around your home.

Water goes where it should

Correct falls carry rainwater away from your house and stop puddles forming.

Covered by our guarantee

All our work is guaranteed. Guarantee terms vary by product and project, and we'll explain exactly what's covered when we quote.

Patios and driveways in detail

The right paving and construction method depends on what the surface has to carry, the look you want and how much upkeep you're happy with.

Patios

Patios are usually built from porcelain, natural stone such as sandstone, or concrete paving. Porcelain is dense, consistent in colour and easy to keep clean. Natural stone has a more traditional, varied look. We'll talk through the options and confirm what's available when we quote.

Driveways

Driveways carry far more weight than a patio, so they need a deeper, stronger sub-base and paving suited to vehicle use. Block paving is a common choice because individual blocks spread the load and can be lifted and relaid if needed.

Relaying existing paving

If your slabs are sound but have sunk or moved, they can sometimes be lifted, the base rebuilt and the same paving relaid. One of our customers had their patios relaid as part of a wider garden project.

Paths and steps

Paths and steps connect the different areas of a garden. On sloping sites, steps are planned with the overall levels so they're comfortable to use and safe in wet weather.

Drainage under and around paving

Surface water has to go somewhere. We plan falls, edge details and, where needed, drainage so water runs off cleanly rather than soaking into the base or towards the house.

Residential and commercial

Home patios are designed around how you'll use them: dining, seating or a route to a garden room. Commercial and educational areas are designed for heavier footfall and straightforward upkeep.

Choosing paving that suits your home

Paving looks different on a red-brick semi than on a new build with grey render. We'll look at the colours and materials already around your home and suggest options that tie in, so the patio or driveway looks as though it was always meant to be there. If you'd like to see the options before deciding, we'll talk you through choosing paving as part of the quote, just as Laura O. described in her review.
